Priming and painting MDF?

i just built a monstrous wall unit out of MDF. (8' wide by 7' tall). Im told that it should be primed with a oil based primer and then painted with an oil based paint. My question is, what brand of primer would be the best to prime this with? all exposed edges will be covered with trim when installed so the edges are not an issue. i see that home depot sells kilz original primer, but on the can it says that it is only for smoke and water damaged substrates...would it hurt if i used it?
